The Cowboys have requested an interview with Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker for their defensive coordinator opening, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Parker would be a tough loss for Philadelphia‘s defense. He has helped coach Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean to All-Pro accolades.
It’s not surprising that the Cowboys have shown interest. In the coming weeks, more NFL teams may request to speak with Parker, 34, who is widely regarded as one of the league’s top position coaches.
In Dallas, Parker would replace former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, whose unit finished 30th in total defense this past season.
Parker joined Philadelphia’s staff last season, reuniting with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, his former boss with the Denver Broncos.
Years down the line, Parker would be the perfect replacement for Fangio once he retires. However, the Eagles probably won’t be able to hold onto him for that long.
Eagles cornerbacks coach Roy Anderson could step into Parker’s role if Parker departs.
The Eagles may draft another cornerback this spring to play on the boundary opposite Mitchell. If Parker stays with Philadelphia, that player would be in good hands.
Parker also helped develop Broncos All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II during his time in Denver and has brought Mitchell to a comparable level in two years.
