NFL owners are meeting in Minnesota this week to discuss potential rule changes ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

One of the proposals submitted by the competition committee was a revision to the current onside kick rule. The committee has proposed that onside kicks be allowed at any point when a team is trailing (instead of being limited to the fourth quarter). The revision also calls for the kicking team to line up one yard closer to the receiving team, hypothetically making it easier to recover the ball.

Onside kicks would still need to be declared under the revised rule.

The proposal passed on Wednesday.

The NFL has flirted with the idea of replacing traditional onside kickers with a 4th-and-15 scenario, but that suggested revision has never received enough support to pass as a new rule.

Under the old format, clubs had a 16.4% success rate for onside kick attempts. That number dropped down to 8% last season. So if the Denver Broncos need to attempt an onside kick this fall, kicker Wil Lutz and his squad will not have the odds on their side.
