The Buffalo Bills’ firing of head coach Sean McDermott left plenty of NFL fans surprised, and it seems members of the team were just as stunned.
NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe explained that Bills’ players were in “complete shock,” adding that one player texted him and said, “WTF,” while another said, “Wait, what? Why?”
The Bills fired McDermott on Monday after Buffalo finished the season 12-5 with a divisional round exit. He coached the team for nine seasons, amassing a record of 98-50.
According to Wolfe, the firing had much to do with McDermott’s lack of postseason success. He noted that “the Bills believe they have a team that was talented enough to win this year.”
The Bills reached the playoffs in all but one season with McDermott at the helm, making the AFC championship game twice. Ultimately, they never got over the hump of making the Super Bowl despite having an MVP-caliber quarterback leading the way.
Now, Buffalo will try to find the coach that will finally lead it to the promised land.
