Jim Irsay passes away at 65

Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO JIm Irsay has passed away at 65 the team announced on Wednesday

Jim Irsay owns the Indianapolis Colts, but he’ll always have a connection to Baltimore. The legendary Colts owner, and son of Robert Irsay, passed away on Wednesday at 65. Irsay’s late father, Robert, acquired the Baltimore franchise in 1972 for $12 million and moved it to Indianapolis in 1984.

Irsay was the general manager of the Colts from 1984 to 1996 and took over day-to-day operations shortly after his father passed.

Under Irsay’s leadership, the Colts accumulated more than 260 wins, 10 divisional titles, and 18 playoff appearances.

At 37, Irsay became the NFL’s youngest owner and led the organization to new heights along with Bill Polian when he selected Peyton Manning as the first overall pick out of Tennessee in the 1998 NFL draft. Manning, a Hall of Famer and one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, was their starting quarterback from 1998 to 2010.

Manning and Irsay’s most significant moment in 2007 was when his team won the Super Bowl.
