John Harbaugh was officially introduced as the New York Giants head coach on Tuesday. After a week in which the coach and the team took extra time to work on the contract details, the Giants acquired the services of one of the most sought-after coaches in this year’s carousel.
The Baltimore Ravens fired him after 18 years. They couldn’t advance to the 2025 playoffs after rookie place kicker Tyler Loop missed a potential game-winning field goal against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18.
During his introductory press conference, Harbaugh said that Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid gave him a valuable piece of advice. The three-time Super Bowl champion told Harbaugh that his next chapter could bring positive things to his career.
“Andy is a man of few words. His four words to me were, ‘Change can be good,’” Harbaugh said. “He was excited. He’s fired up for us, he’s a good friend. “How about we deal that right now? We’ll sign up for that deal right now, what he did in Kansas City. Let’s do that.”
Harbaugh’s family has a long-standing relationship with Reid. They worked together on the Philadelphia Eagles for eight years (1999-2007) before he joined the Ravens.
Contrary to Reid, John Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with his first team. If he can emulate or surpass what Reid did in Kansas City, he will go down as one of the best coaches in Giants history. The similarities are there, starting with the quarterbacks.
Jaxson Dart drew comparisons with Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes during his rookie season. If Harbaugh develops him, the Giants will be in contention again in no time. Harbaugh posted a 180-113 record with the Ravens, including a Super Bowl win in the 2012 season. He won the Coach of the Year award in 2019.
