LOS ANGELES — The Rams are moving on to the NFC Championship game after Harrison Mevis’ 42-yard field goal puts down the Chicago Bears 20-17 in overtime on Sunday night.

“I was very confident that he would make that,” said head coach Sean McVay postgame.

On a blistering cold night in Chicago, the Rams needed to dig deep to gut out a win. Caleb Williams made spectacular plays throughout the night and the Bears defense gave the Rams offense everything they can throw at them.

Los Angeles needed Mevis to be perfect to win and he was exactly that.

Mevis known as the “Thiccer Kicker” went four for four with kicks including two extra points.

“My thought process is just keep it simple. I have the easiest job out here,” Mevis said. “I get to kick the ball and they get to do all the hard running and blocking and passing.”

The former UFL kicker started the season with the New York Jets but was waived on the final cuts and re-signed to the practice squad on August 27th. He was later released by the Jets which led him to Los Angeles.

After early season struggles from kicker Joshua Karty the Rams were desperate for a change. They brought in Mevis and former Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship to compete for the job and Mevis won out. Mevis was signed to the Rams in early November and had to beat out Karty for the position and he did.

He was signed to the roster on November 8th, and a day later made his NFL debut. Mevis converted all six of his extra point attempts in the Rams’ 42–26 victory over the San Francisco.

Mevis finished the season 12-13 (92.3%) with a long of 52 yards. He made all 39 extra point attempts and stabilized the Rams kicking game with his near perfection.

“I feel like I’m reaping the reward of all the work that I’ve done to get here and belief in myself and I feel like my confidence is through the roof right now,” Mevis said.

The trust of the Rams in November led to Sunday night when Mevis knocked in the game-winning kick.

“It means everything, and all the work that I’ve put in to get to this point, it’s pulled through,” Mevis said.

Mevis has proved so far that the Rams kicker change was 100% the right move and he will be a key component if Los Angeles is hoping to secure a spot in the Super Bowl in Santa Clara on February 12th.

“He’s done it every time we’ve asked him,” said quarterback Matthew Stafford. “He’s stepped up and made kicks. He does it in practice all the time. He’s consistent. He’s a gamer.”
