Pittsburgh Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl will interview for the Atlanta Falcons open GM position, per beat writer Mark Kaboly. It’s a notable twist in the Steelers’ offseason as the team is already searching for a new head coach and likely, almost an entirely brand new coaching staff.

Atlanta is the only team with an open GM spot and one of just two vacancies this season. The Miami Dolphins filled their position earlier this month with the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan, helping bring Steelers’ head coach candidate Jeff Hafley to Miami.
This is Weidl’s first known interview of this cycle. He’s received occasional looks before but has generated less interest than expected given his strong resume, ties to names like Ozzie Newsome and Howie Roseman, and the Steelers’ relative success during Weidl’s tenure.
A Pittsburgh native, Weidl was hired in May 2022 as the team’s Assistant GM at the same time Omar Khan was tabbed as Kevin Colbert’s successor. Weidl’s strength is in scouting and draft preparation, a role he held with the Philadelphia Eagles and one that carried over to the Steelers.
The Falcons have introduced a multi-layered reporting structure after hiring Matt Ryan as the team’s President of Football. Reports indicate Ryan has final say in team decisions, though would offer deference to the general manager. It would offer Weidl some, but not complete, power in the organization. The Falcons cleaned house this offseason, firing GM Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris. Over the weekend, Atlanta hired former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski for the same position.
Given his close ties to Matt Ryan, Chicago Bears’ executive Ian Cunningham has been widely linked to the Falcons job. But despite speculation that’s lasted weeks, his hire hasn’t happened. San Francisco 49ers’ executive Josh Williams has also been connected. It’s possible with Stefanski’s hire, the organization decided to pivot away from their options and explore new names like Weidl.
Given the Falcons lack of competition, the franchise may not be in a rush to hire a new general manager even if the team would prefer a hire relatively soon with the Senior Bowl taking place at the end of the month.
Should Weidl leave, it’s not clear if Pittsburgh would hire a replacement assistant general manager or reshuffled the organization another way. It’s possible Director of Player Scouting Mark Sadowski, who has known Khan for years and was quickly hired once Khan was elevated to GM, could be promoted in-house.
