The 49ers battled all season with injuries to key players. Making it to the Divisional Round was an accomplishment for head coach Kyle Shanahan, but the team didn’t have the firepower to make a run to the Super Bowl.
Wide receiver was a weakness for San Francisco, and it didn’t help that star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk didn’t play a snap in 2025.

In July, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the physically unable to perform list for MCL and ACL injuries that ended his season prematurely in 2024. In November, San Francisco voided the guaranteed money on his contract. On Dec. 13, reserve/left squad list, ending his season.
Shanahan told reporters at the time that the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list because he hadn’t shown up to work for a month.
“We haven’t seen him in forever,” Shanahan said. “It’s just a decision they make. It’s been pretty simple for me … I haven’t seen him in a month.”
Per Nick Wagoner of ESPN, 49ers general manager John Lynch told the media on Wednesday that Aiyuk’s time with the organization is coming to an end.
“It’s safe to say he’s played his last snap as a Niner,” Lynch said.
In August of 2024, Aiyuk agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension.
Aiyuk, a first-round pick in 2020, recorded 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns for the 49ers during the regular season, helping the team make Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs. He caught three passes for 49 yards in the 25-22 loss to Kansas City.
During his 67 starts and 69 appearances for the 49ers, Aiyuk recorded 294 receptions for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns. He had back-to-back 1,000-plus yard receiving seasons for 2022 and 2023.
