Antioch High School receives grant funding from Tennessee Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Antioch High School has gotten grant support from the Tennessee Titans — both on and off the field.

After a challenging year, the team has stepped up to support the Bears.

“Football, man — it’s kind of a gateway into your next phase of life,” AHS’ head football coach, Arcentae Broome, said.

The Bears had their best football season in over a decade, sending some seniors off to play at the college level. However, in January, tragedy struck when a shooting on campus claimed one student’s life, forcing the school into lockdown and shaking the community to its core.

“It’s something we have tried to put behind us and put past us,” Broome said. “You know, I think our kids are very resilient.”

Now, the Tennessee Titans have stepped in — not just with words, but with actions.

“We see them on TV … The giving back part is letting young people know that [the Titans say] ‘Man, we’re invested in what you do,’” Broome added.

This year’s grants ranged from $1,500 to $5,000. The Tennessee Titans distributed over $100,000 in grants to 33 youth football organizations across Tennessee. Grants were awarded based on merit, need, and the organization’s commitment to coaching education and best practices.

“Being able to try to make the game a little bit safer and more accessible is something that we are always interested in, and we’re really happy to have them as part of our grant program this year,” Vice President of Cause Marketing for the Tennessee Titans, Josh Corey, said.

But for AHS, the support went even further. The Tennessee Titans Foundation donated 22 top-of-the-line helmets worth about $9,013, plus an additional $10,000 for various school projects.

“It means that the players can play, and the coaches can coach, and they don’t have to spend time worried about raising money,” Corey expressed.

That money will ease pressure on coaches and families, help cover equipment costs, ensure player safety and give Antioch’s athletes one less thing to worry about.

“Helmets were always a big thing,” Broome said. “Helmets have skyrocketed over the years, so in talking about that, I’ve always thought that man, if we can get some help from somebody else other than what we normally get, then it would be good.”

“We could just wrap our arms around Antioch High School and really just kind of celebrate them and just acknowledge everything that the staff and the students and the teachers were able to accomplish during a very difficult year,” Corey said.

With another football season on the horizon, Broome told News 2 that this shows his players there is a community huddling around them.

“This is just one thing that you’ve got to look at and say, ‘There are people out there that really, really want to help make us better,’” Broome said. “‘They want to help to see us strive to higher heights and make our dreams come true.’”
