The Las Vegas Raiders will soon be on the clock. At this time, many project that the Raiders will select Indiana’s star quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, with their top selection.
This week, the former Raiders star quarterback Derek Carr spoke on Mendonza potentially landing in Vegas, making his feelings clear about the potential pairing.
“For the record, I want him to be the quarterback,” Carr said of the Raiders.
Carr’s past comments on Mendoza landing in Vegas caused some confusion over time. Therefore, the retired passer felt he had to set the record straight.
“I’m setting the record straight. But I also want them to do so much around him, that when he walks in there, he’s the greatest Raider of all time. For the record, he should absolutely be the first-overall pick, which I said he is the undoubtedly the No. 1 overall pick. I want to see him in silver and black so bad. I love him.”

Mendoza, 22, hails from Boston. He attended California from 2022 to 2024. During his final season at Cal, Mendoza started 11 games. He threw for 3,004 yards, tossing 16 touchdowns and just six interceptions. They posted a 6-5 record with Mendoza at the helm.
2025 was a glow-up for Mendoza’s draft stock. With the Hoosiers, he completed 273 yards for 3,535 yards, 41 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Indiana went undefeated en route to a National Championship win.
At this point, he seems to be the likely pick for the Raiders. Carr simply hopes that the Raiders’ front office does everything they can to supply him with the right weapons to set him up for success as early as possible.
“I don’t want to see him get beat down and see that happy face not be able to look into that camera during that interview,” Carr finished. “Mendoza is the No. 1 overall pick, but in free agency, you’d better spend every bit of your money to put it around him.”
Following a 3-14 season, the Raiders have a lot of work to do ahead of free agency and the NFL Draft. Mendonza’s future will be decided officially on April 23.
