The Green Bay Packers interviewed former Pro Bowl cornerback and current Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Al Harris for the team’s open defensive coordinator job on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Harris played eight seasons for the Packers between 2003 and 2010, tallying 14 interceptions and making two Pro Bowls (2007, 2008). He is an enshrined member of the Packers Hall of Fame.

After his 15-year NFL playing career, which ended with a retirement as a member of the Packers in 2013, Harris jumped into the coaching side. He served as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-15 and was later promoted to secondary coach in 2016, serving in the role through 2018. He spent one season as an assistant at the collegiate level with FAU in 2019 and then joined Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys, serving as defensive backs coach for five seasons (2020-2024) and assistant head coach for one season (2024).
Harris joined Ben Johnson’s staff with the Bears as the defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator in 2025 and helped Chicago lead the NFL in interceptions and total takeaways.
Harris has never been a defensive coordinator or called plays, so getting the job in Green Bay would be a big step up the career coaching ladder for the 51-year-old. It’s possible Harris is ready for the jump after serving under respected coaches such as Dan Quinn and Dennis Allen in recent years.
Harris has not interviewed for any other defensive coordinator position so far during this cycle.

Among the players coached by Harris include Kevin Byard, Jaylon Johnson, Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and Marcus Peters.
As a player, Harris appeared in over 200 NFL games, including the postseason. He was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2021.
