As the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to search for their next head coach, several names have entered the mix. Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy, Chris Shula, and Nate Scheelhaase are names that have been connected to the Steelers quite often, and a few of those have been thought of as favorites for the job. However, another candidate to consider is Anthony Weaver.
Miami’s defensive coordinator is another name that’s drawing interest around the league during this cycle. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, he’s someone to keep in mind in both Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
“Anthony Weaver is gonna be in that mix, too. The Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, who is also up for those head coaching jobs with the Baltimore Ravens, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Arizona Cardinals. And from what I gather, both the Ravens and the Steelers are staying in touch with him and his camp. In terms of, like, they like him. So, I could see him being a finalist for those jobs,” Russini said Wednesday on her Scoop City podcast.
Russini is not wrong that Weaver is a candidate the Steelers are keeping close tabs on. Shortly after Mike Tomlin informed the Steelers of his decision to resign, Weaver was among the first handful of coaches the Steelers requested to interview.
Things must have gone well in the first interview, as the Steelers set up a second with Weaver just days later. Russini mentions the Ravens’ interest, which feels real since they have also set up two interviews with Weaver.
The interest in Anthony Weaver makes sense. He’s been the defensive coordinator in Miami for two years and has done well despite not having a ton of talent on those defenses. He also served as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans in 2020 and worked as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens for three years before his stint in Miami. That previous experience with the Ravens is likely part of the reason they’re interested in him as well.
Coming in for a second interview is always a sign of strong interest from a team. But Weaver isn’t the only coach the Steelers are looking at. He’s a defensive specialist, hasn’t been a head coach before, and isn’t that old, at the age of 45. All things the Steelers have sought in former head coach hires.
However, he’ll have to compete with Flores and McCarthy, each of whom has already had in-person interviews with the Steelers. There’s also Shula and Scheelhaase, who can’t meet in person yet since the Rams are still alive in the playoffs, but are still candidates for the job. Weaver’s in-person interview will happen on Friday.
It feels like the list of names to keep an eye on is growing by the day. However, Weaver does seem like he could be a finalist for the Steelers, as Russini mentions. If his interview goes well on Friday, he could be on track to get the job.
