With this year’s NFL draft officially in the books, the next item on the agenda for the Detroit Lions will be getting their seven selections signed to rookie deals.

According to the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, the length of rookie contracts is fixed and cannot be altered.

First-round draft picks receive a four-year deal with the team holding a fifth-year option, meaning the player’s base salary is fully guaranteed. Second- through seventh-round picks also receive four-year deals, but without a team option.

Additionally, rookies are not allowed to renegotiate their contracts until after completing their third season. Last offseason, the Lions signed Penei Sewell and Amon-Ra St. Brown to extensions after three seasons, but this year, they opted to exercise the fifth-year options on Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams instead.
