Addressing the wide receiver position appears inevitable for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, as it stands out as the team’s biggest need entering the 2026 offseason.
After a major underperformance from the wide receiver room in 2025 outside of WR1 DK Metcalf, Pittsburgh will likely look to upgrade the position through free agency or the 2026 NFL Draft.
In the upcoming 2026 free agency market, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce is among the top available players, and the Steelers are viewed as one of the leading landing spots for the standout 25-year-old playmaker.
Ethen Hutton of Sports Illustrated recently listed the Steelers as one of the more likely landing spots for Pierce in free agency, while also listing the Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, and New York Jets as other potential suitors.
Pierce put together a highly impressive 2025 season, hauling in 1,003 receiving yards and six touchdowns, while notably leading the NFL in yards per reception at 21.3, according to ESPN.

Why the Steelers Hold an Edge in the Alec Pierce Sweepstakes
Pierce’s breakout 2025 campaign is expected to earn him a big payday this offseason, and the Steelers are well-positioned to make a strong push.
“Pittsburgh enters the offseason with a top-10 cap situation in the NFL, with plenty of financial freedom to strike a deal with Pierce. The team is in dire need of receiver help outside of DK Metcalf, a billing the star wideout fits perfectly,” wrote Hutton.
The second-most productive wide receiver for the Steelers in the 2025 regular season was Calvin Austin III, who recorded 372 receiving yards and three touchdowns, according to ESPN, highlighting Pittsburgh’s need for a reliable WR2 to pair with Metcalf.
The combination of Pittsburgh’s expected aggressive pursuit of a dependable WR2 this offseason and the franchise’s financial flexibility could work in the team’s favor if they target the Colts’ wide receiver.
On top of that, the Steelers were the only team of the four Hutton mentioned that made the playoffs this season, which could make them more appealing to Pierce in free agency.

Alec Pierce Climbs the Rankings After a Breakout Season
There is no doubt that multiple teams will check in on Pierce if he hits the open market. He is ranked as the sixth overall player set to enter free agency and the second-best wide receiver, trailing only Dallas Cowboys star George Pickens, according to Garrett Podell of CBS Sports’ 2026 free-agent rankings.
“Pierce’s speed at 6-3, while weighing 211 pounds, is a rare combination. He’ll likely be able to command at least $20 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars extending Jakobi Meyers on a three-year, $60 million deal,” wrote Podell.
If Pittsburgh is able to acquire Pierce in the offseason, a wide receiver duo of Metcalf and Pierce would immediately become a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.
