Sources say the FBI and DEA are examining medical treatment involving opioids and ketamine.

Federal authorities have opened an investigation into the death of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

The FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration are examining the circumstances surrounding Irsay’s death in May at the Beverly Hills Hotel, as well as the actions of a California addiction specialist who had been treating him with opioids and ketamine, according to the sources. Irsay was 65.

Dr. Harry Haroutunian signed Irsay’s death certificate, which listed the cause of death as cardiac arrest due to pneumonia, according to ABC Eyewitness News. The certificate indicated no autopsy was performed.

Dr. Hartounian and the FBI have not issued any statements to the press.

Irsay, a billionaire businessman, owned the Colts for nearly three decades and presided over the franchise’s Super Bowl victory during the 2007 season with quarterback Peyton Manning. He had spoken publicly for years about his struggles with addiction.

The use of ketamine in addiction treatment has drawn increasing scrutiny following the 2023 death of actor Matthew Perry.
