The Steelers will be undergoing several coaching changes this offseason following the resignation of head coach Mike Tomlin. Pittsburgh verbally agreed to hire Mike McCarthy on Saturday as its next head coach, and the Steelers will also be searching for a new offensive coordinator.
Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is expected to take the same role at Ohio State, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Saturday.
Smith served as the Steelers offensive coordinator from 2024 to 2025 after the Atlanta Falcons let him go as head coach. Smith began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at North Carolina. He’s only spent two years coaching at the college level, including a season as a defensive intern at Ole Miss in 2010.
Ohio State’s offensive coordinator Brian Hartline accepted the head coaching position at South Florida in early December. Now, the Buckeyes have finally found someone to take charge of their offense.
Ohio State’s head coach, Ryan Day is known for his offensive-minded approach; however, he allowed Hartline to handle the play-calling throughout last season, only stepping in for the College Football Playoffs. It’s likely that Smith will take over the play-calling duties at Ohio State moving forward.
