New Dolphins OC Bobby Slowik’s Numbers and Rankings from his Last OC Stint

Jeff Hafley, in one of his biggest hires as the new Miami Dolphins head coach, is retaining Dolphins Sr. Passing Game coordinator Bobby Slowik and promoting him to offensive coordinator.

This will not be the first time Slowik will be an NFL offensive coordinator; he served in this role for 2 seasons in Houston.

In 2023 and in 2024.

Dolphins fans have taken to social media, and in typical fashion, there is a split on this hire.

Some fans are up in arms, outraged, and upset by Hafley making Slowik the offensive coordinator.

Other fans are fine with it, and in some cases, happy Slowik is staying.

As always, the truth behind this hire lies in the numbers.

How did Houston’s offense perform in 2023 and 2024 when Slowik was calling the plays, because honestly, that is all that matters at the end of the day.

The numbers don’t lie.

In 2023, here is how Houston’s offense ranked…

Total Yards 12th

Total Points 14th

Total Offense 23rd

Rushing Offense  23rd

Passing Offense 7th

Scoring Offense  14th

Yards Per Play: 12th 5.4 yards

Touchdowns Per game: 11th 2.5 TD’s per game

Points per Game: 13th 22.7 PPG

3rd down Conversions Per Game 19th with 4.9 conversions per game

Explosive Plays: 14th (ahead of Pat Mahomes and KC, who were ranked 15th)

In 2024, here is how Houston’s offense ranked in the same categories…

Total Yards 22nd

Total Points  19th

Total Offense 19th

Rushing Offense 15th

Passing Offense 21st

Scoring Offense 19th

Yard Per Play 19th 5.2 yards

Touchdowns Per game: 21st 2.2 TD’s per game

Points Per Game: 18th 22.0 PPG

3rd down Conversions Per Game: 8th: 5.4 (first place was Tampa Baywith 6.4)

Explosive Plays: 15th

So a bit of a mixed bag, and 2023 was a better season for Houston’s offense than 2024 was.

After the 2023 season, in which Houston’s offense ranked highly overall, and rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud won Offensive Rookie of the Year, Slowik was seen as the hot assistant coach who would likely get a head coaching job.

He interviewed for head coaching jobs with Washington, Seattle, Carolina, Tennessee, and Atlanta.

At the end of the day, he stayed in Houston as their offensive coordinator and received a contract extension.

In 2024, because the offense regressed somewhat, Houston gave up many sacks, and many in Houston felt Slowik didn’t adapt well, he was fired as the Texans’ offensive coordinator.

It is unfair to blame Slowik for C.J. Stroud‘s regression from 2023 to 2024, because a coach can only do so much.

Plus, Stroud’s regression from 2024 to 2025 is really alarming, and Slowik wasn’t in Houston for that. So, to blame any one coach for Stroud’s regression is really unfair.

Sometimes it’s just on the player.

It is unknown what role he played in Miami this past season in game planning or playcalling.

We know Mike McDaniel was a control freak with his offense, and Frank Smith was the offensive coordinator, so Slowik’s role wasn’t what it was as a Sr. Passing Game coordinator; as it was like when he was the offensive coordinator with all the power in Houston.

To give him any credit or blame would be unfair, as nobody truly knows how much of a voice he had in Miami’s offense in 2025.

So, what do you think?

Do you like Bobby Slowik as Miami’s offensive coordinator?

Or are you unhappy with the hire?
