Baker Mayfield Must “Take Some Ownership”
January 25th, 2026
What’s next for the Buccaneers offense with Zac Robinson taking over from fired fall guy Josh Grizzard at offensive coordiantor?
A guy who knows Robinson well has an answer.
Joe’s referring retired QB Brian Hoyer. He was a teammate of Robinson’s on the Belicheats when New England made Robinson a seventh-round pick quarterback in 2010.
Now a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio after last playing for the Raiders in 2023, Hoyer talked about liking the Bucs hire of Robinson and how it’s time for Robinson and Mayfield to spend a lot of time crafting the offense — together.
Hoyer dove into how Mayfield is a veteran with extensive experience in a Robinson-style system. Per Hoyer, it’s time for Mayfield to “take some ownership” of the offense because he knows exactly what he likes and doesn’t like as an eighth-year quarterback.
More rollouts next season would be good for Mayfield, says Hoyer, who claims Mayfield is an excellent West Coast-style quarterback. And that West Coast system is at the root of the Sean McVay tree from which Robinson is a branch.
Joe’s in favor of Mayfield getting heavy-handed with the offense. But that can be a slippery slope.
Bucs fans saw what happened in 2022 when Tom Brady basically was co-offensive coordinator with Byron Leftwich. The Bucs averaged just 18.4 points per game, one point more than when Josh McCown and Mike Glennon were under center in 2014.
