Andy Reid ‘fired up’ for Eric Bieniemy’s return to Kansas City

  • January 27, 2026

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he’s fired up about Eric Bieniemy’s return to Kansas City as offensive coordinator.

“There’s nobody like EB on the field,” he said about Bieniemy’s energy on the staff. “He’s gonna be very direct with the players, very direct with the coaches, and it’s a different flavor.”

Reid confirmed that other candidates were interviewed for the job, but declined to share who those candidates were. He says it’s what Bieniemy brings outside of a playbook that made him the right choice for the job.

“I think he’s got great knowledge of the offense, I think he understands leadership. I’ve always said he’s a great leader of men,” Reid said.

He calls the return a win-win. The two-time Super Bowl champion knows how the Chiefs roll, having served on Andy Reid’s staff from 2013-2022. He spent 2018-2022 as offensive coordinator, helping the Chiefs to their Super Bowl wins in 2019 and 2022.

After three years away in various roles, he now brings the experience of coaching the running backs in one of the NFL’s top offenses this past season (Chicago). The Chiefs notably struggled to establish a run game in 2025.

“Everywhere you go in this business, you pick something up. You might take it with you, or you might say I don’t wanna do that. And at the same time, he’s got all those years in this system, too. So he understands that. So I welcome that. Always keep my ears and eyes open for things,” Reid said.

And Big Red has plenty he wants to improve upon after a disappointing year, where the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

“I’m fired up to get in this offseason and get going. We didn’t do very well this past year, and that’s not been our MO there,” he said.

As for their most recent offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Reid wants to see him fill one of the league’s open head coaching jobs.

“Before the season even started here, I knew that he wanted an opportunity to have his own show. He’s been a head coach, he was coach of the year,” he said about Nagy. “He deserves to have a head coaching job.”

Reid confirmed he will continue to call plays, but is open to input from Bieniemy and the occasional seizing of the reigns as well.

“I still enjoy calling plays. But what I do is I also, I’m not afraid to delegate, get opinions from people. And then even in certain situations, letting them go ahead and call things in different areas. So we do this jointly. I keep it open, and I felt that’s the best way. I want guys that contribute, I want them to work hard and be an expert in their area.”

Reid declined to speak on the other coaching changes the Chiefs have been making around their staff, saying he will at a later date.
