Jeff Hafley and Jon-Eric Sullivan

With a newhhead coach and general manager in place for the Miami Dolphins, questions have now arisen about whether or not they will move on from Tua Tagovailoa and find a new starting quarterback for 2026. While some of their comments were noncommittal, some certainly piqued fans’ interest.

Both Jeff Hafely and Jon-Eric Sullivan made comments about the future of the quarterback position as they were interviewed throughout the week. Hafley’s vision seemed very clear and concise: “I want a winner. I want a guy who just…he’s got it mentally, he’s got it physically, he’s got it up here, but he’s got it in his heart. And I want a guy who can walk into a room, and everyone says, “That’s our quarterback”.

Hafley’s Vision Leaves the Door Open

While this says nothing about the future of Tagovailoa and what cutting him could mean financially for the organization, Hafley did seem to suggest a different direction with those words.  After all, Tua would still be owed upwards of 10 million dollars in compensation for the 2026 season either way. Furthermore, he himself admitted that a fresh start would be best for him.

With this vision in mind, when. the discussions come around to Tua, at the very least, fans will know what Hafley has in mind at the position, but until then, we will just have to stand pat and wait.

Sullivan Preaches Patience at Quarterback

On the other hand, GM Jon-Eric Sullivan was much more vague in his analysis of the QB position. While he, unlike Hafley, will be largely in charge of the decision-making process, he didn’t exactly kick Tua to the curb with his comments: “With Tua or anybody else, to sit up here today and tell you that I have a great understanding of what we’re gonna do or which way we’re gonna go, that would be a lie because there’s just too much work to do.”

One of the most experienced GMs in the league knows best about what to look for in a franchise QB, having worked with the Packers for countless years. Still, it leaves more to be desired as Sullivan looks to be taking a more patient approach to proceedings before taking a leap of faith.

The most important aspect of both interviews is that both men desire direction. Sullivan and Hafley are aligned in their understanding that there are many things they need to get right, but they don’t wish to be hasty either. It is also clear that both men have a huge amount of trust in each other and the goals of the franchise.

Still, the decision surrounding Tua and his contract looms large as it will impact how the team will plan its offseason moving forward. In short, while time isn’t of the essence for the Dolphins, they must make sure the decision is perfect for them.

“There’s too many conversations to be had at this point,” Sullivan said of the decision . “We have to figure that out. We will, but today’s not the day I can give you that answer.”
