Stepping in as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike McCarthy is reportedly making some changes.
“Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar is among the #Steelers coaches not being retained by new head coach Mike McCarthy, sources tell @CBSSports,” CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz wrote Tuesday on X. “Coached in Pittsburgh the last eight years, working with stars like Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt. Also coached several other Pro Bowl picks as the DL coach for teams such as the Vikings, Jets and Bills.”
Dunbar had been with the Steelers since 2018. Before then, he was the defensive line coach for Nick Saban at Alabama (2016-17), the Buffalo Bills (2015), New York Jets (2012-14), Minnesota Vikings (2006-11), LSU (2005), Chicago Bears (2004) and Oklahoma State (2002-03).
After Mike Tomlin resigned earlier this month, leaving after 19 seasons in charge, Steelers president Art Rooney II and general manager Omar Khan allowed Tomlin’s assistant coaches to seek other opportunities. Longtime special teams coach Danny Smith took the same position for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith bolted for Ohio State and Teryl Austin is in the mix for the Washington Commanders’ defensive coordinator job.
Former New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator has been floated as a candidate for the same spot under McCarthy in Pittsburgh. The coaching staff will begin to take shape over the coming weeks.
