Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells is interviewing for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive coordinator job, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. The interview will occur later this week.
Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells is expected to interview this week for the Steelers offensive coordinator job,
Wells worked under Steelers HC Mike McCarthy in Dallas for five years, and interviewed this month for the Commanders OC job. He also is head coach for the west…

As Schefter notes, Wells is currently in Frisco, Texas, serving as one of the head coaches of the 2026 East-West Shrine Bowl that will be played tonight. He will lead the West team.
Wells and new head coach Mike McCarthy have plenty of history. After being hired by the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, McCarthy tabbed Wells as the team’s tight ends coach. He’s remained in the role since, even after McCarthy left and Brian Schottenheimer was promoted to replace him.
Wells, 42, has done good work with Dallas’ tight ends. Dalton Schultz was drafted in 2018 but broke out in 2020 under Wells, catching 63 passes for 615 yards and four touchdowns. His 2021 production was even stronger, 78 catches for more than 800 yards and four scores before showing slight regression in just 15 games the following year. Schultz turned that success into a sizeable contract with the Houston Texans.
Jake Ferguson stepped in to replace Schultz and enjoyed similar production. A fourth-round pick in 2022, Ferguson is a one-time Pro Bowler with 231 receptions, 2,039 yards, and 15 touchdowns in four years with Dallas. While most of his work was done underneath in 2025, Ferguson caught eight touchdown passes (third among all tight ends) on 82 receptions.
In 2023, the Cowboys drafted TE Luke Schoonmaker in the second round. Though his career has gotten off to a slow start, he’s caught 49 passes and three touchdowns over the past two combined seasons.
A college offensive lineman who played at Southern, Wells broke into coaching at the high school level in 2006. He became an assistant offensive line coach at LSU in 2008 and broke into the NFL as an offensive quality control coach with the New York Giants in 2012. From 2013-2017, he served as the Giants’ assistant offensive line coach before being promoted to tight ends coach for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. There, Evan Engram had two solid seasons.
NFL rules state one minority candidate must be interviewed, virtually or in-person, for coordinator roles. Wells would satisfy that requirement, but his resume is one of a serious candidate to become Pittsburgh’s new offensive coordinator.
Our coaching staff tracker will update with his name and the rest of the Steelers’ potential and confirmed staff as it fills out in the days and weeks ahead.
