The Bills will have a new head coach

Following their 7-10 season, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel after four seasons with the team. Despite some offensive success, particularly in 2023, the Dolphins struggled to find footing over the last two seasons as they went below .500 and missed the postseason. Due to his offensive prowess, McDaniel became a popular candidate during this coaching cycle, eventually getting hired by the Los Angeles Chargers as their new offensive coordinator.

Despite reports circulating that McDaniel was set to be hired by the Chargers, he took longer than expected, as for a moment it seemed he was a candidate to land the Bills’ head coaching job. The Bills fired their head coach despite making the postseason for the seventh consecutive season. However, a lack of playoff success was the primary reason for head coach Sean McDermott’s dismissal.

Now, the Bills have decided who will be their next head coach, and he is someone the Dolphins are familiar with.

Bills Announce Former Miami Dolphins Candidate Joe Brady as HC

The Miami Dolphins’ division rival, the Bills, have announced that offensive coordinator Joe Brady has been promoted to be the team’s head coach. When the Dolphins began their head coaching search this offseason, Brady was one of the few offensive-minded coaches Miami interviewed for their head coaching vacancy. Ultimately, he did not get a second interview because new head coach Jeff Hafley was the only candidate to receive a second interview with the team.

Brady has been with the Bills organization since 2022. He was their quarterbacks coach in the 2022 season, before replacing offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, who was fired halfway through the season. Dorsey made headlines during the 2022 season, as he had a viral outburst in the coaching booth as the Bills lost to the Dolphins and watched the clock run out before they could get a final play off.

Since Dorsey’s firing, the Bills have gone 7-1 against the Dolphins with Joe Brady as their offensive coordinator. It remains to be seen how he fares as head coach. He does not have any prior head coaching experience.

Dolphins Coaching Staff

While the Bills are beginning the process of hiring their new head coach, the Dolphins are already filling out their staff that will serve under head coach Jeff Hafley. Miami already announced they are promoting pass-game coordinator Bobby Slowik to be their new offensive coordinator, a move that received some negative criticism.

The team has yet to announce a defensive coordinator, but it is possible the team is waiting to see if current defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver lands a head coaching job. Weaver is currently a candidate for several jobs, and the Dolphins would get two third-round picks if a team were to hire him. If he does not land a head coaching job, he is not expected to remain as Miami’s defensive coordinator. The Dolphins were one of the few teams with a head coaching vacancy that did not interview Weaver.

Joe Brady and the Bills will not be able to retain their special teams coach Chris Tabor, as he has already been hired by the Miami Dolphins.
