The New York Jets are coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history as they finished the 2025 NFL season with a disappointing 3-14 record after a tough campaign. New York hasn’t been to the playoffs since the 2010 season and while they are armed with the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Jets felt like another chance was needed on the coaching staff.
Various NFL insiders reported that the Jets parted ways with offensive Tanner Engstrand on Tuesday after just one season on the job. Engstrand, 43, was the leader of an offense that finished amongst the worst in the league in several categories, including yards and points scored. While Engstrand was the offensive coordinator, it’s clear that the Jets had plenty of reasons that led to the offense being inept.
Under Engstrand, New York finished as one of the worst passing offenses as they finished 26th in attempts, 32nd in yards gained, and 31st in passing touchdowns scored. Part of the reason for the lack of offensive success was the fact that quarterback Justin Fields, who the Jets brought in on a two-year, $40 million contract in free-agency, didn’t pan out to be the guy the team was hoping for as their starting signal-caller.
What was interesting about the Jets last season is that while the passing offense left plenty to be desired, the rushing attack was serviceable. New York’s ground game, led by running back Breece Hall and his 243 carries for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns, finished the season 10th in rushing yards, eighth in yards per attempt, but just 23rd in touchdowns scored as the Jets struggled to finish drives in the red zone when they got there.
According to SNY’s Connor Hughes on X, the Jets “The team held ‘many’ discussions about the role in recent days” when it came to Engstrand’s role with the team moving forward. “While originally they planned to keep Engstrand, but reduce his responsibilities (hire someone else to call plays), they ultimately decided it was best to move on.” New York will be looking for a new offensive coordinator along with many other positions on the coaching staff to fill.
