As the Washington Commanders continue to rebuild their coaching staff, they may need to adjust for additional coaches leaving the organization. On Tuesday, it was announced that Commanders‘ defensive passing game coordinator, Jason Simmons, will interview for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ vacant defensive coordinator position.

Simmons is a former Pittsburgh Steelers safety. He played there from 1998-2001, followed by six seasons with the Houston Texans before retiring as a player. After his playing career, Simmons joined the ranks of coaches in the NFL. For eight of his first nine seasons, he coached with the Green Bay Packers under Mike McCarthy, the new head coach of the Steelers.

While Simmons may have his own motivation for heading to Pittsburgh, this could also be a sign that the Commanders’ new defensive coordinator, Daronte Jones, may be bringing his own staff to Washington. Between his collegiate and professional coaching experience, he likely has a list of coaches he’s ready to bring in. Whether that’s what he does or not remains to be seen.

Given the connections between Simmons and McCarthy and Pittsburgh, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him head back to the Steelers. So if Jones doesn’t have a plan for his staff, he should probably think of someone to step in.
