A change is coming to the Houston Texans‘ coaching staff this offseason.
According to multiple reports, the Texans have fired tight ends coach Jake Moreland after three seasons. Moreland is the first major firing of the offseason and the first offensive firing since offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik after the 2024 season.
Where will the Texans turn next season for the tight end spot? Right now, there’s no clear front-runner, but It’s expected that second-year play-caller Nick Caley will have a say on who he wants to join the staff. Caley is expected back as the team’s offensive coordinator and got his start in coaching tight ends between stints with the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams.
Moreland’s tenure will mostly be known for his work with Dalton Schultz. After a promising career as a member of the Dallas Cowboys, Schultz flourished in 2023 as C.J. Stroud’s security blanket en route to a 10-7 AFC South division title. He finished with 59 catches for 635 yards and five touchdowns, resutling in a three-year extension.
More of the 2023 version appeared in 2025 for the Texans’ veteran tight end, as Schultz became the franchise’s single-season leader in receptions with 82, surpassing longtime great Owen Daniels. He also finished with 777 yards and three scores.

But the production from the Texans’ other tight ends didn’t blossom as Ryans hoped. In fact, every other tight end over the past three seasons struggled with production, blocking development, and health. Cade Stover missed multiple games with various injuries, while Brevin Jordan was limited to two games over two years due to season-ending injuries.
The Texans will pick 28th overall in the upcoming NFL draft in April.
