The Pittsburgh Steelers have had the most Super Bowls of any NFL team since 2008. However, the New England Patriots are hot on their heels. The Patriots also have six Super Bowls and a chance to capture their seventh championship this year. That’s not the only Steelers record they can break, either. Drake Maye could supplant Ben Roethlisberger as the youngest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Roethlisberger wouldn’t be too upset about that, though.
“He’s got a chance to break my youngest quarterback record that’s been running for a long, long time now,” Roethlisberger said Wednesday on FS1’s First Things First. “I’m rooting for it. I’m rooting for him, but I’m not rooting for the Patriots because then they pass the Steelers in the list of most Super Bowls. So, I’m torn there.”
Roethlisberger set the record in 2005, when he helped the Steelers win their fifth championship in his second NFL season. Maye is also in his second season. Roethlisberger was 23 years old when he won Super Bowl 40. While Maye is also 23, he’s younger than Roethlisberger by 178 days.
It’s not too surprising to hear that Roethlisberger isn’t clinging to his record. He showed a similar attitude towards Aaron Rodgers during this past season. Rodgers had a chance to pass Roethlisberger in career passing yards, and the retired quarterback didn’t seem too upset at that. He feels like records should be broken.
However, there’s still a part of Roethlisberger that doesn’t like the Patriots. They stood in the Steelers’ way of winning the AFC for basically Roethlisberger’s entire career. While the faces on the Patriots have changed, Roethlisberger still might not love the franchise. That’s especially true because they can break their tie with the Steelers for most Super Bowls.
Funnily enough, Maye can break Roethlisberger’s record against the same team the Steelers quarterback defeated in Super Bowl 40. The Seattle Seahawks were on the wrong side of history in 2005. Now, 20 years later, will the Seahawks lose to a second-year quarterback again? Most Steelers fans are likely rooting against Maye and the Patriots. Roethlisberger won’t be too torn up if his record falls, though.
