Trent Sherfield Bounced Around This Season
Sherfield has played with seven teams over the course of his eight-year NFL career, including a season with the Bills in 2023. Though he didn’t play a major role on offense for the Bills, he did catch a touchdown in the season finale against the Miami Dolphins, a winner-take-all game that gave the Bills their fourth straight division title.
As the Patriots noted when signing Sherfield to their practice squad, the 29-year-old is well-traveled in this season as well.
“Sherfield signed with Denver as an unrestricted free agent from Minnesota this past offseason, and he played in 10 games with three starts for the Broncos and caught 3 passes for 21 yards,” the team noted. “He was released by Denver on Nov. 15 and then was signed by Arizona to the practice squad on Dec. 6. Sherfield was elevated to the active roster and played in two games for the Cardinals in 2025. He was signed by New England to the practice squad on Jan. 13 and released on Jan. 24.”
While it’s not clear if Sherfield would be a candidate for elevation for the Super Bowl, he could bring some versatility to the Patriots. The veteran has plenty of experience on special teams, appearing in 51% of the special teams snaps for the Broncos this season.
Bills Facing Changes at Wide Receiver
The Bills are expected to see more changes at wide receiver this coming offseason, with veteran Gabe Davis set to hit free agency after his injury-shortened season.
Davis had been a top target of quarterback Josh Allen since being drafted in 2020, but the Bills allowed him to leave in free agency following the 2024 season. Davis played for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season but suffered a season-ending injury, leading to his return to Buffalo.
The Bills also face a potentially difficult decision on Keon Coleman, who will be entering his third season with the team. Coleman was benched twice this season for disciplinary reasons after missing team practices and meetings, then became the subject of debate at the press conference where team owner Terry Pegula and president of football operations Brandon Beane discussed Sean McDermott’s firing.
After Pegula placed blame on McDermott for wanting to draft Coleman, Syracuse.com reporter Matt Parrino suggested that the young receiver may not have a future in Buffalo.
“One major takeaway today: I don’t see a path forward for Keon Coleman to remain a Buffalo Bill,” Parrino shared in a post on X. “Despite Brandon Beane’s comments on organization’s belief in him, feels like relationship may be fractured beyond repair after Terry Pegula’s revelation on decision to draft Coleman.”
