The Washington Commanders need help in their secondary and the Kansas City Chiefs could offer them an option.

After making it all the way to the NFC Championship Game in 2024, the Commanders had a woefully disappointing 2025 campaign.
One of the many issues the Commanders had was defending against the pass, as evidenced by Washington finishing with the fifth-most passing yards per game surrendered.
The stage is now set for a massive overhaul in the cornerbacks room, as Jonathan Jones and Noah Igbinoghene are both pending free agents, and Marson Lattimore remains a stone-cold lock to get cut.
One avenue the Commanders could explore is a trade for Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie, who is entering the final year of his $13 million rookie contract.

FanSided’s Christopher Kline predicts McDuffie will be traded to Washington during the offseason.
“Dan Quinn has proven his ability to lead a great defense, but Washington just bled points last season,” he wrote. “The roster is way too old, and the DB room features more than its share of question marks. McDuffie can come in, in the prime of his career, and give the Commanders a new long-term staple on the outside.”
Like the Commanders, the Chiefs had a very disappointing season that saw the team fall short of the playoffs for the first time in forever.
Making matters worse for Kansas City, no team in the NFL has a worse cap space outlook, with the Chiefs projected to be $62.5 million over the cap in 2026.

All of this could lead to a transition year for the Chiefs, and if that’s the case they might not be keen on shelling out big bucks to extend McDuffie.
We’ve seen the Chiefs trade high-profile cornerbacks instead of paying them before, and most notably with Marcus Peters and L’Jarius Sneed.
Still just 25 years old, McDuffie would add some much-needed youth to the roster and he could be a long-term solution for the Commanders at cornerback.
He offers inside/outside versatility, and his playoff experience that features two Super Bowl rings is a huge plus, also.
Because McDuffie is in the final year of his deal and needs to get paid, it shouldn’t cost a ton to acquire him, and with a positive financial situation over the next few years, Washington can afford to extend him.

If the Chiefs do decide to trade McDuffie, the Commanders are most certainly a logical landing spot for the veteran.
