The New York Giants have to pivot. Once they hired John Harbaugh to take over as the team’s next head coach, it was widely believed that Todd Monken was going to be the offensive coordinator.

It was Monken’s job to lose, but he was gaining interest from the Cleveland Browns to potentially become their next head coach. At the time, all signs were pointing to Jim Schwartz in Cleveland, leaving Monken with a high chance of relocating from Baltimore to New York.

But the Browns shocked the football world this week. Instead of bumping Schwartz up to the head coaching job, they decided to hire Monken. That placed Harbaugh and the Giants in a surprising situation.

It’s still early on in the process, but the Giants have been linked to several candidates since Monken was crossed off. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart has quietly endorsed one of the early candidates.

“Jaxson Dart has put in a good word for Charlie Weis Jr,” Raanan said this week, according to a report. Weis, a former Ole Miss coach, worked directly with Dart before he made his way to the New York Giants.

During his three-year run at Ole Miss, Dart appeared in 39 games. He completed 735 passes, hitting on 65.7 percent of his attempts. He threw for over 10,000 yards in three years, tossing 72 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Weis has been a notable riser since the start of the NFL offseason. He was quickly linked to the Giants after it was clear that they would move on from Mike Kafka. Weis also earned a look from the Philadelphia Eagles, who were on the hunt for an offensive coordinator. He removed himself from consideration earlier this week.

It’s clear that Weis has a strong interest in joining Lane Kiffin at LSU, but the NFL is still calling. Could Dart be the reason why Weis takes the leap to an offensive coordinator job with the Giants? It’s possible, but the process is still ongoing.

Beyond Weis, the Giants have reportedly shown interest in Jim Bob Cooter, Alex Tanney, and Davis Webb. The first two come from Indianapolis, while the third is a former Giants quarterback, working under Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos.

Webb has been a popular candidate during this cycle and was viewed as a finalist for the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job. On Thursday, he reportedly removed himself from consideration.

Getting the right play-caller for Jaxson Dart will be a massive decision for the Giants. If they are prioritizing familiarity, Weis is a logical candidate for the position.
