The Denver Broncos made a power move to fire offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi after a 14-3 season that resulted in a No. 1 seed in the AFC Playoffs but ended with a 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

The result of firing Lombardi might end up being the key to the Broncos actually playing in the Super Bowl one year from now if things play out like Denver wants them to. The first piece fell into place on Thursday night.

“Broncos QBs coach Davis Webb plans to withdraw from the Raiders head coaching search and is considered a prime candidate for his current team’s OC job, source says,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on X. “He’s also received several OC requests.”

Whatever those requests are, it would be hard to imagine Webb leaving to become offensive coordinator for another team at this point.

Webb ended the regular season as a hot candidate to become an NFL offensive coordinator somewhere else in 2026, but quickly became a dark horse candidate — than more serious than that — for several teams.

“Broncos passing game coordinator Davis Webb is withdrawing from consideration from the Raiders head coaching job, per source,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on X. “Webb interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Raiders, Bills and Ravens.”

Broncos Fans React to Webb’s Decision

As could be imagined, Broncos fans were happy about Webb’s decision — not only because they keep one of the NFL’s elite young offensive minds for another season but also at the chance to stick it too a hated AFC West Rival.

There was also some apprehension another team might come in and swoop up Webb a its offensive coordinator.

Of the 10 NFL head coach openings this offseason, only 2 remain unfilled with the Raiders and the Arizona Cardinals.

“Webb backing out of the Las Vegas HC process doesn’t guarantee Denver is able to keep him — he’s got a ton of OC interest around the league — but it gives the Broncos a chance,” The Denver Post’s Parker Gabriel wrote on X. “A clear figure in their own OC search.”

“He’s probably the OC for the Giants, Ravens, or Broncos,” NYC Sports Addict wrote on X. “I heard he wants play-calling, and he can only have that with the Broncos if Sean Payton gives it up.”

Webb Could Be Top HC Candidate in 2027 Cycle

If Webb can deliver as an offensive coordinator in 2026 there’s little doubt he would be one of the most sought-after head coaching candidates in the NFL one year from now.

In 2026, for the second year in a row, there will be 10 new NFL head coaches.

There have been multiple head coach openings every year for at least the last 20 years, dating back to 2006, with the highest being 11 openings in 2009 followed by the lowest amount of turnover the very next year, with just 3 in 2010.

In 2026, there are several jobs that seem like they could be perfect fits for Webb — mainly because of the quarterbacks who play there — with Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor and Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn both on the hot seat after lackluster seasons in 2025.
