On the same day he was announced as the next Buffalo Bills head coach, Joe Brady has made his first staff hiring.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Brady is hiring former Steelers offensive line coach Pat Meyer for the same role in Buffalo. The two coached together with the Carolina Panthers in 2020 and 2021 when Brady was the offensive coordinator and Meyer was the offensive line coach.

Meyer spent the last four seasons with the Steelers on Mike Tomlin’s staff after coming over from the Panthers. Meyer, 53, has coached in the NFL since 2013, including stints with the Chicago Bears, Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, Panthers and Steelers.

The longtime offensive line coach returns to Buffalo, where he served as an offensive assistant in 2015 and 2016 under Rex Ryan and interim head coach Anthony Lynn.

During his Steelers tenure, Meyer helped usher in a new era up front. The Steelers selected left tackle Broderick Jones in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft and then landed right tackle Troy Fautanu, center Zach Frazier and right guard Mason McCormick with three of the first four picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Things didn’t start out all that great in Meyer’s tenure. The Steelers tried to shore up their offensive line quickly for Meyer, signing James Daniels and Mason Cole in free agency. Cole wasn’t the answer at center, though it did lead to the selection of Frazier, who now looks like the next Steelers great at the position.

Pittsburgh later signed Isaac Seumalo in free agency and then went big in the draft in back-to-back years with the four selections up front. Pittsburgh never quite became that good run-blocking offensive line that many envisioned with the additions, but the group played well from a pass-protection standpoint.

He also deserves a ton of credit for getting Dylan Cook up to speed late in the season as the fourth left tackle on the Steelers’ depth chart. Cook stepped in against the Baltimore Ravens late in Week 14 and then started from Week 15 on and played well down the stretch.

Now, with James Campen coming to Pittsburgh to work on Mike McCarthy’s staff, Meyer moves on to Buffalo. Ironically, Campen replaced Meyer in Carolina and also with the Chargers.

Kind of strange how the NFL coaching landscape works.

New #Steelers OL coach James Campen is taking over for Pat Meyer, the same guy he replaced in with the #Panthers in Carolina ahead of the 2022 season, when Meyer came to Pittsburgh.

In Buffalo, Meyer gets to work with All-Pro left tackle Dion Dawkins, not to mention some talented pieces up front in right tackle Spencer Brown, right guard O’Cyrus Torrence, left guard David Edwards and center Connor McGovern.
