Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel is a big fan of the Bills’ decision to hire Pete Carmichael Jr. as their new offensive coordinator

The Buffalo Bills have been busy to start the offseason, and it appears their plan for the next few months is beginning to come into focus. After firing head coach Sean McDermott in the wake of their latest playoff failure, the team opted to promote its own offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, to be his replacement.

Brady has since begun working on filling out his staff, as he will have to fill both his offensive and defensive coordinator roles. On Friday morning, Brady hired Denver Broncos‘ senior offensive assistant Pete Carmichael Jr. to be his new offensive coordinator, and the move immediately drew a strong review from former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel.

I was with Joe Brady & Pete Carmichael in 2017 in the QB room….this is a fantastic hire.

Expect a lot of Sean Payton influence in Bills offense…under center big play action to add to Josh Allen’s game. https://t.co/JVVqeIM9Mz

Carmichael has been working as a football coach for over three decades, with all of his experience coming on the offensive side of the ball. Carmichael has spent the majority of his career with the New Orleans Saints, where he worked as their offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2023. Over the past two seasons, though, he reunited with Sean Payton in Denver, working as a senior offensive assistant.

One of the coaches Carmichael had as part of his offensive staff during his time with the Saints was Brady. New Orleans was the first team Brady worked with in the NFL, as he spent two seasons working with Carmichael as an offensive assistant in 2017 and 2018. That helped propel Brady to become one of the fastest-rising head coach candidates in the league.

Now that Brady is in charge of the Bills, he quickly turned to Carmichael and recruited him to be his offensive coordinator. Daniel, who spent the 2017 season with New Orleans, got to see the dynamic between Brady and Carmichael firsthand, and he believes that Buffalo made the right decision with its latest big coaching move.

“I was with Joe Brady & Pete Carmichael in 2017 in the QB room….this is a fantastic hire,” Daniel wrote in a post on X shortly after news of Carmichael’s hire was reported. “Expect a lot of Sean Payton influence in Bills offense…under center big play action to add to Josh Allen’s game.”

Joe Brady’s Staff Beginning to Come Together for the BillsJoe Brady of the Buffalo Bills.

GettyThe Buffalo Bills are shaking things up again with another new staff hire following new head coach Joe Brady.

Initially, it seemed like Brady was going to focus on finding a defensive coordinator as his first big move in charge of Buffalo. While another prominent Broncos’ coach, defensive pass game coordinator Jim Leonhard, has emerged as Brady’s top target, he’s drawing interest from several other teams, which has slowed the Bills’ pursuit of him.

That led Brady to pivot to his offensive coordinator spot, where he has brought a familiar face, Carmichael, to town. With Josh Allen manning the quarterback position, that is going to immediately make life pretty easy for Carmichael, but he could add some wrinkles to the offense that help Allen take his game to another level (as crazy as that may sound). With Carmichael officially onboard, Brady will likely begin focusing more on finding a defensive coordinator now.
