  • January 30, 2026

HOUSTON – The Texans are hiring former New York Giants assistant offensive line coach James Ferentz to their offensive staff, per a league source.

Ferentz is expected to help with tight ends.

Ferentz, 36, is a former Texans undrafted free agent who played two seasons for the AFC South franchise.

Ferentz has also played for the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, including for Texans offensive line coach Cole Popovich.

Ferentz earned two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots before retiring after the 2023 season.

He played in 61 career NFL games with 10 starts in eight NFL sesaons.

He played collegiately at Iowa for his father, Kirk Ferentz, and was a second-team All-Big Ten Conference center.

Ferentz spent a year out of football before signing with the Texans and joining their practice squad. He was claimed off waivers a year later by the Denver Broncos and played 14 games on a Super Bowl winning squad led by Peyton Manning.

After two seasons in Denver, he signed with the Patriots and played for them for six seasons. He overlapped with Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley, senior offensive assistant Jerry Schlupinski and offensive line coach-run game coordinator Cole Popovich and general manager Nick Caserio in New England.

At Iowa, he started his final 38 games for the Hawkeyes.
