FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons named Ian Cunningham the organization’s newest general manager late Thursday evening.
Cunningham spent the last four seasons as the assistant general manager for the Chicago Bears, helping to rebuild a storied franchise that went back to the playoffs this past season after securing an NFC North title.
In the wake of Cunningham’s hire — one that is a dream realized for the new general manager — top Bears executives gave the following statements about Cunningham, the work he’s done for Chicago as well as their personal support for him in his new role.
Statement from Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles
“We are beyond proud of the well-earned opportunity that Ian has been presented with at the Atlanta Falcons. Ian’s drive to build and foster a winning culture, both on and off the field, is infectious. The Falcons gain one of the hardest-working, most genuine, and loyal teammates and leaders in our industry. I am blessed and fortunate to have had the opportunity to partner with Ian over the last four years, and I cherish the memories and first-hand perspective that I had as he positively influenced our entire organization. A trusted leader, a tremendous talent evaluator, an incredibly diligent worker, and an excellent communicator, those traits pale in comparison to the human being that Ian is and the endearing qualities that he will bring to the Falcons. While he will be sorely missed throughout our Chicago Bears Family, I am thrilled for Ian and his family as they take the next step in their journey, and I look forward to watching Ian create a positive impact on the Falcons organization and throughout the Metro Atlanta region.”
Statement from Chicago Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren

Ian has been an incredible partner to Ryan Poles, playing an integral role in transforming our football operations department. Ian is truly a great teammate, leader, and consummate professional. We are truly blessed by the work and wisdom Ian has poured into the Chicago Bears Family to positively influence our environment. We are excited for Ian as he takes the next step in his career journey. Ian has made an everlasting and indelible impression on the Chicago Bears, and we pray for Ian and his family as he works in collaboration with Arthur Blank, Josh Blank, Matt Ryan, Greg Beadles, and Kevin Stefanski to build the Atlanta Falcons.”
