Veteran offensive coach Pete Carmichael Jr. is set to leave the Denver Broncos staff to become the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills under newly named head coach Joe Brady, according to multiple reports.
Carmichael, 54, has spent the last two seasons as a senior offensive assistant in Denver under head coach Sean Payton, after a long tenure as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.
The Bills, who recently promoted Brady to head coach following Sean McDermott’s departure, are turning to a familiar face as Brady looks to build his staff. Brady and Carmichael previously worked together on the Saints’ offensive staff in 2017–18. While Brady is expected to continue calling plays in Buffalo, Carmichael will take on coordinating duties and help shape the offense around quarterback Josh Allen.
The move also marks a significant shift for the Broncos’ offensive coaching room, which recently saw the departure of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and now will also lose Carmichael to Buffalo.
During his long tenure in New Orleans, Carmichael was one of the most influential offensive figures in franchise history. He joined the Saints’ staff in 2006 as quarterbacks coach and became offensive coordinator in 2009, working closely with Drew Brees during the team’s rise to perennial contender status. Carmichael held that role through the 2023 season, spending more than a decade designing and calling plays in Sean Payton’s system. Carmichael remained on staff when Dennis Allen became head coach and took full playcalling responsibilities
Carmichael played a key role in the Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV championship and multiple top-five NFL offenses.
