Olathe City Council Member LeEtta Felter confirmed the news to KMBC on Friday.

The proposal was released early Friday evening on the city’s Website.

If approved, Olathe would pledge certain new tax revenues generated inside the STAR Bonds project area to help repay the bonds for up to 30 years.

That would include the city’s 1% general sales tax, its 17.63% share of Johnson County’s 0.5% sales tax, and 7% of the hotel tax collected from lodging within the district.

The city says, under the ordinance, taxes already dedicated to street maintenance, parks, voter-approved uses, or other special taxing districts would not be affected, and no revenue from outside the project area would be used.

The agreement takes effect only if the Chiefs’ headquarters and practice facility are built within the designated area and the bonds are issued by Dec. 31, 2030.

The meeting will take place at Olathe City Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, at 7 p.m. and will include a section for public input, Felter said.

Last month, Olathe Mayor John Bacon announced plans to bring the Chiefs’ headquarters to town in a Dec. 22 press conference in Topeka with state and team officials. That same day, the team announced it would bring a new stadium to Wyandotte County.

The Chiefs announced their Olathe location will have mixed-use developments “that could include sports, entertainment, dining, shopping, office, hotel and residential properties.”

The development could also include a stadium for Olathe Public Schools, Bacon told KMBC in December.

Two sources who did not wish to be identified due to ongoing negotiations have confirmed to KMBC 9 Investigates that the Chiefs are exploring land directly south of the Garmin Olathe Soccer Complex for its headquarters and practice facility, along South Ridgeview Rd., just south of K-10 Highway.

This is a developing story.
