Sean Payton certainly has an eye for coaching talent.
Seven years ago, Payton hired Declan Doyle (who had been a student assistant at Iowa) as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints in 2019. Doyle ended up outlasting his boss in New Orleans as Payton stepped down following the 2021 season, and Doyle remained with the Saints through the 2022 campaign.
When Payton became the Denver Broncos‘ head coach in 2023, he recruited Doyle as tight ends coach. Doyle held that role for two seasons before leaving to become the Chicago Bears‘ offensive coordinator in 2025. Now, after one season as an OC, Doyle has joined the Baltimore Ravens, according to multiple reports.
It’s technically a lateral move (he’s still an OC), but Doyle will get to call plays, duties that he did not have in Chicago. Now, the 29-year-old coach is set to call plays for Lamar Jackson this fall.
He’s had quite the rise, and it started with Payton giving him his first role in the NFL.
