Ravens’ offensive coordinator Declan Doyle’s old comments on the quarterback position have resurfaced
A new era of Baltimore Ravens football is set to get underway in 2026. After concluding a disappointing 2025 campaign, the Ravens decided to fire longtime head coach John Harbaugh. Former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter was brought in to replace Harbaugh, and one of his first big moves saw him hire former Chicago Bears‘ offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to fill the same role on his staff.
Despite being only 29 years old, Doyle has enjoyed a meteoric rise as a coach over the past few years. Now, he will be tasked with helping get Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense back on track after a down year in 2025. And in the wake of Minter’s decision to hire him, some old comments from Doyle about the importance of the quarterback position will surely catch the attention of Jackson.
Declan Doyle Reveals Importance of Quarterback in His Offensive System
When Ben Johnson was hired to be the Bears’ head coach last offseason, he surprisingly decided to hire Doyle to be his offensive coordinator. After spending two years working as the Denver Broncos‘ tight ends coach, Johnson saw enough to make Doyle the youngest offensive coordinator in the history of the NFL.
Doyle promptly proved he’s one of the brightest young offensive minds in the NFL. Working with Caleb Williams, Doyle worked on restructuring the offense to fit his playstyle. The result saw the Bears enjoy a major bounce-back campaign in 2025, as they ended up making it all the way to the divisional round of the playoffs.
Now, Doyle will have a new opportunity to work with Jackson in Baltimore. While Williams has some similarities to Jackson, the latter’s standing as the best dual-threat quarterback in the league means that Doyle is going to have some work to do when it comes to building his offense around his most important player. The good news for Baltimore, though, is that Doyle did precisely that when taking over for Chicago last year.
“You try to shape the offense around the player,” Doyle said in a conversation on “NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov” last year. “We’ve tried to give him a lot initially and see what he can really handle, and then from there, it’s our job to shape it so that he has success.”
Ravens Have High Hopes for Declan Doyle

Helping Williams establish himself in the NFL will surely be a more difficult job for Doyle than helping Jackson get back on track. The Ravens’ offense in 2025 was bogged down by injuries, with Jackson spending the majority of the year playing at less than 100% health. Assuming he can stay on the field, Doyle should be able to help Baltimore’s offense reemerge as one of the top units in the league.
When designing his offense, Doyle will likely lean heavily on the ground game, which is led by Jackson and superstar running back Derrick Henry. If either of these guys can get going, that will help open the passing attack and make life even easier for Jackson under center. Doyle is more than capable of helping this group excel, and fans will be hoping he can work his magic with the Ravens when they return to action in 2026.
