After 10 years as a player and four years as a coach, the Washington Commanders have moved on from Ryan Kerrigan. The franchise’s all-time sack leader played 10 seasons for Washington from 2011-20, played one season for Philadelphia before retiring, and immediately joined the Commanders‘ coaching staff.
Kerrigan first joined Washington’s staff in 2022 under former coach Ron Rivera as the assistant defensive line coach. The Commanders fired Rivera after the 2023 season, and new coach Dan Quinn retained Kerrigan, naming him the assistant linebackers coach and pass rush specialist. At different times over the last two seasons, Quinn and former defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. praised Kerrigan for his individual work with Washington’s pass rushers.
Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, the Commanders also parted ways with assistant defensive line coach Sharrif Floyd and player development coach Pete Ohnegian.
Floyd, a former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, followed Quinn to Washington from Dallas and began his coaching career in 2019 at the high school level. He joined his alma mater, Florida, as an undergraduate assistant for two seasons before spending the 2023 season with the Cowboys.
Ohnegian also followed Quinn from Dallas to Washington. In 2023, Ohnegian served as a defensive quality control assistant for the Cowboys, where he assisted the linebackers and monitored the development of Dallas’ defensive players.

Earlier this week, defensive passing game coordinator Jason Simmons departed for a role on Mike McCarthy’s new coaching staff with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since the Commanders finished 5-12, Quinn has been busy rebuilding his coaching staff, first moving on from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. Washington promoted assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough to replace Kingsbury and assistant offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton to replace Johnson.
After a three-week search and interviewing nine candidates, the Commanders hired Daronte Jones as the new defensive coordinator this week.
