While the San Francisco 49ers are planning for their 2026 season and beyond, they’ll need to identify targets to sign in free agency as well as their biggest areas of need.
One of San Francisco’s biggest weaknesses is their wide receiver room, which is set to lose Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, Skyy Moore and Trent Taylor in free agency.
With that in mind, Pro Football Focus’ Nathan Jahnke recently identified the 49ers as the ideal landing spot for Romeo Doubs this offseason.
“The 49ers will need an X receiver next season if Jennings doesn’t re-sign,” Jahnke wrote. “Jennings has spent most of the last two seasons as their X receiver, as Brandon Aiyuk played the X position before that. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spent most of 2008-2016 as an assistant under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan with three different franchises, so Doubs would be a strong schematic fit with the 49ers offense.”
Doubs, 25, played collegiately at Nevada, earning All-Mountain West honors twice before Green Bay took him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Over the last four years, he appeared in 59 games and caught 202 passes for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns. He returned 15 punts in 2025 for 6.3 yards per return.

If the 49ers want to make it back to the postseason again in 2026, they’ll need to surround Brock Purdy with more weapons, and Doubs could be a big piece to lock up.
