It did not take long for former Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand to land a new job.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Atlanta Falcons are hiring Engstrand to be their new offensive passing game coordinator, joining the team’s new head coach Kevin Stefanski, who was hired Jan. 17.

Engstrand spent one season as the Jets’ offensive coordinator before the Jets parted ways with Engstrand last Tuesday. Jets’ offense was ranked 29th in the league, averaging 263.6 yards per game. The Jets were also last in the league in passing offense (140.3 yards per game) but finished 10th in rushing (123.3).

Before joining the Jets, Engstrand spent five seasons with the Detroit Lions, starting as an offensive assistant and working his way up to passing game coordinator.

When Aaron Glenn was hired to be the Jets’ head coach last offseason, he brought Engstrand over to fill the offensive coordinator position. However, with Justin Fields underperforming and wide receiver Garrett Wilson missing 10 games due to injuries, the Jets’ passing offense never developed consistency.

Engstrand will join a Falcons team that has its own questions at quarterback, with both Michael Penix Jr. and Kirk Cousins on the roster. Penix is working his way back from a left knee injury he suffered in Week 9 that ended his season and paved the way for Cousins to take his place.

The Falcons also have running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Drake London, two young players who have become key contributors. The Falcons are hoping to retain impending free agent tight end Kyle Pitts, who finished second among all NFL tight ends in receptions (88) and receiving yards (928).

Meanwhile, the Jets are still looking for Engstrand’s replacement. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the team has interviewed five candidates and plans to bring in three candidates for in-person interviews before making a decision. Fowler also said one of the candidates is former Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman.
