The Miami Dolphins are expected to hire Sean Duggan as their next defensive coordinator, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Duggan served as the Green Bay Packers’ linebackers coach this past season.

In the 2024-25 campaign, Duggan was a defensive assistant for the Packers. Prior to his time in Green Bay, Duggan served on Boston College‘s staff from 2020-23.

In his final season with the program, Duggan was Boston College’s co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Duggan also has coaching experience at Ohio State, UMass and Hawaii.

Sean Duggan played at Boston College from 2011-14. In his four seasons with the Golden Eagles, Duggan recorded 115 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

On Jan. 19, the Miami Dolphins hired Jeff Hafley as their next head coach. Hafley was Boston College’s head coach from 2020-23. He hired Duggan in his debut campaign at the helm of Boston College.

Like Duggan, Hafley spent the past two seasons in Green Bay, where he was the team’s defensive coordinator. The Dolphins’ decision to hire Hafley and Duggan is a result of the organization hiring Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager.

“Jeff is a man of integrity, intellect and great passion who players will buy into and play for,” Sullivan said in a team statement. “He has a vision for the kind of team we will be and the ability to motivate them to move in one direction on the path towards that goal. I’m thrilled to go on this journey with him and together we will build a winner that this organization deserves.”

Hafley replaced Mike McDaniel, who was the Dolphins’ head coach from 2022-25. Jon-Eric Sullivan isn’t the only who’s confident in the Dolphins’ future under Hafley’s leadership.

“I believe great things are ahead for the Miami Dolphins with Jeff Hafley leading the way,” Dolphins chairman and owner Stephen M. Ross said. “Jeff is an accomplished coach with a proven track record as a leader and motivator. He has tenacity and grit, while at the same time establishing trust with his players in order to get the most out of them. I am excited to see where Jeff leads us, alongside Jon-Eric Sullivan and our entire football operation, as we seek to return the Dolphins to sustained success.”
