The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly making another hire to their coaching staff, as Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported on Sunday night that the team is expected to hire Mark Lovat. Lovat was most recently with the Tennessee Titans but also worked for the Packers when Steelers’ head coach Mike McCarthy was the head coach in Green Bay.

Lovat had spent 25 years in Green Bay before he was hired by the Titans in 2024, and he’s spent the last two seasons in Tennessee. He also worked with QB Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, and back in 2016, Rodgers praised Lovat in an ESPN article.

From 2010-2018, Lovat was the strength and conditioning coordinator for the Packers, but he’s been an assistant strength coach since 2019, and that was the role he held with the Titans. It’s unclear what exactly his role will be with the Steelers, but he does have experience being the head strength coach if that’s what the Steelers are hiring him for. From 1999-2009, he was the assistant strength and conditioning coach in Green Bay.

As Zenitz wrote, Lovat is a former strength coach of the year, winning the honor in 2011 per his bio with the Titans.

Lovat was a collegiate baseball player at Butler University and is the son of Tom Lovat, who was an NFL offensive line coach from 1980-2003. Father and son never overlapped with the Packers, however, and McCarthy never coached with the older Lovat. Lovat also has ties to Pennsylvania as he got his master’s degree in exercise science and performance enhancement from California University of Pennsylvania in California, Pa.

Phil Matusz had served as the Steelers’ Head Strength & Conditioning coach for the last two seasons, while Justus Galac and Tyler Judkins were members of the strength staff, while Roderick Moore served as the Sport Science Coordinator. Garrett Giemont, who had been with the Steelers since Mike Tomlin was hired in 2007, was the Senior Conditioning Coordinator. It’s unknown if any of them will be retained, but Lovat will now be a member of the strength staff, though his role is still unknown.

It’s another coach who’s familiar with McCarthy and Rodgers joining Pittsburgh’s staff, in addition to offensive line coach James Campen and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. Jason Simmons, hired to join the defensive staff, has also coached under McCarthy while assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans played for McCarthy in Green Bay.
