The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of work to do in their wide receivers room, which is nothing new for the franchise.
Pittsburgh has failed to acquire an adequate No. 2 receiver the past two seasons, so that remains a high priority in 2026. Furthermore, the Steelers need more depth behind DK Metcalf and whoever they secure as his top running mate.
The Steelers hoped that 2024 third-round pick Roman Wilson would help out with one of those issues, but instead the Michigan product has barely played and it’s clear that Pittsburgh doesn’t have much trust in him for whatever reason.
In an article laying out the moves the Steelers should make this offseason, Behind The Steel Curtain’s Jarrett Bailey predicts Pittsburgh will trade Wilson to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick.
“Both sides just need a fresh start. Wilson has never been given a real chance with Pittsburgh, and the Steelers need proven talent at the position over hopeful projects. The Panthers lack depth at receiver, so giving up a Day Three Pick in the 2027 draft is a fair price to pay to see if Wilson can be a contributor,” Bailey said.
We totally agree with Bailey that Wilson, who is entering the third year of his $5 million rookie contract, desperately needs a change of scenery and at this point it makes sense for the Steelers to trade him if they don’t plan on using him.
We can’t say for sure why Wilson has been an afterthought, especially given the team’s need at wide receiver in recent years, but the 24-year-old needs to go somewhere that gives him a chance.
Carolina would be a fine opportunity for Wilson to get some playing time.
Assuming the Panthers bring back exclusive rights free agent Jalen Coker, Carolina has two starting spots locked in for 2026 with Coker and Tetairoa McMillan.
There will be roles up for grabs behind those two, though, and especially the No. 3 wide receiver role, where Xavier Legette hasn’t done enough to cement himself.
Even if Wilson can’t get that spot on the depth chart, factoring in as the No. 4 option would still be an upgrade in workload for the former third-rounder.
