The state’s all-time winningest coach is stepping down.

Bill Hurst is stepping down as head football coach at Centreville Academy after 49 years. Hurst went 447-159 overall and won 10 state championships all at Centreville. Hurst’s 447 wins are the most all-time.

Hurst is staying on staff as the defensive coordinator. Offensive coordinator and athletic director Brian Stutzman has been named the new head coach of the Tigers.

“We’ve been very blessed and God let me do what I wanted to do and was very blessed to have some good players. He placed me here,” Hurst said. “I’m staying for a few more years as defensive coordinator because I told the kids I would stay and work with them. Brian played for me in the late 80’s and early 90’s and has been my right-hand man for a while, so we will do a great job.”

In 2025 Hurst guided the Tigers to a 12-1 season and claimed the MAIS Class 2A, Division I state championship.

“It’s been a lot of fun and blessed to be able to coach this long with great coaches and players in a great community and school. Blessed to have a lot of success at a small school,” Hurst said. “My first year as head coach we went 10-1 and won state championship with 16 players, so from the start we’ve worked really hard with what we had.”
