While many were expecting the Pittsburgh Steelers to announce another official coaching hire for Mike McCarthy’s staff for 2026 for offensive coordinator, the person many expected to get the job will not be taking the position. Even though there have been plenty of rumored hires by the Steelers, it is important to remember that nothing is official until announced by the team. One such report/rumor of Scott Tolzien being the Steelers offensive coordinator appears to not be the case as it has been reported by Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports that Tolzien will return to New Orleans.

Scott Tolzien, who interviewed yesterday with the Steelers for their offensive coordinator position, is going to stay with the Saints as their quarterbacks coach, source tells @NFLonCBS.

For those unfamiliar with him, Scott Tolzien was an undrafted quarterback out of Wisconsin who spent time with the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers for his first two NFL seasons but did not appear in any games. Tolzien landed on Green Bay’s practice squad in 2013 and appeared in three games late in the season with two starts. Tolzien was with the Packers for three seasons seeing very limited action. Tolzien then spent two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. In all, he started four games with no wins and one tie. Tolzien began his NFL coaching career in Dallas under Mike McCarthy where he started as a coaching assistant for three seasons before being promoted to quarterbacks coach for two. Not brought back after the departure of McCarthy, Tolzien spent the 2025 season as the New Orleans Saints quarterback coach, where he will now reportedly stay.

One thing of note, had Tolzien taken the Steelers offensive coordinator job, he was not moving into a position with play-calling duties as head coach Mike McCarthy has already stated he would be handling that responsibility. Whether or not that was a factor in Tolzien’s decision to stay in New Orleans, or if the Steelers were ultimately not going to go with Tolzien, has not yet been reported.

Tolzien is not the only coach reported to stay in New Orleans rather than head to Pittsburgh as potential tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Chase Haslett is also staying put according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.

Sources: #Saints TEs coach Chase Haslett — who interviewed for the #Steelers passing game coordinator/TEs coaching position — will also remain in New Orleans.

I’m told it was Haslett’s decision. A fast-rising coach to watch moving forward in upcoming cycles. https://t.co/j75I2Ezkip pic.twitter.com/yRrmueNF0j

The Steelers search for their next offensive coordinator now continues. On Tuesday, the Steelers will be bringing in Vikings tight end coach Brian Angelichio to interview for the position. This perjury Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Vikings TE coach Brian Angelichio is meeting today with Steelers about joining Mike McCarthy’s staff as offensive coordinator/TE coach, per sources. Angelichio, a former Pitt assistant, was McCarthy’s TE coach for 3 seasons in Green Bay.

Brian Angelichio began his coaching career in 1995 at SUNY Brockport on the defensive side of the ball. Over numerous college stops, Angelichio was the tight ends coach for the University of Pittsburgh from 2006 through 2010. Angelichio made the jump to the NFL in 2012 where he spent two years as the tight end coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Angelichio then spent the next two seasons as the tight ends coach for the Cleveland Browns before three years in Green Bay from 2016 to 2018 where he coached with Mike McCarthy. Angelichio spent one season in Washington as their tight ends coach before spending two years with the Carolina Panthers. In 2022, Angelichio became the tight ends coach and passing game coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, the role he currently still holds.
