Fanatics apologized to NFL fans in a statement via social media Monday night, citing customer feedback on several issues relating to jerseys being sold for the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks before the teams’ Super Bowl 60 matchup Sunday.
The apparel company said the Patriots-Seahawks matchup has created “unprecedented challenges for us because of the massive surge in demand we saw from Patriots and Seahawks fans.”
“We’ve let Patriots and Seahawks fans down with product availability — we own that and we are sorry,” the statement said.
Fanatics cited how both teams missed the playoffs last season and then surged into Super Bowl 60, which is “an incredibly rare occurrence that led to these two fan bases buying nearly 400 percent more jerseys since Thanksgiving vs. last year,” the statement said.
Preseason odds via BetMGM placed the Seahawks with 60-1 odds (tied for 19th) and the Patriots with 80-1 odds (tied for 21st) to win this year’s Super Bowl.
“Even though we ordered substantially more jerseys for these teams than ever before, we’ve struggled to meet the overwhelming demand to keep team color jerseys in stock, which we know is your expectation. … We are bringing in more team color jerseys daily and offering alternative options in the meantime,” the statement said.
Fanatics addressed concerns about the quality of the non-team color Seahawks and Patriots jerseys with Super Bowl 60 patches on them, which are selling for $160, saying, “(Fanatics) can assure you that, despite some unflattering photos, these jerseys are identical to the standard Nike replica ‘Game’ jersey — one of the highest consumer-rated items we carry built on the core template that has been unchanged since Nike took over NFL jerseys in 2012.”

There have also been complaints around Fanatics’ price point for jerseys. Prices for an NFL “Game” jersey stand at $130 (without a Super Bowl patch). Nike priced jerseys at $100 starting in 2012. Fanatics’ current price for a standard “Game” jersey is slightly below the 2012 cost with inflation of the dollar factored in.
The company added that if a customer isn’t satisfied with any jersey or other product, then it can be returned for free through the Fanatics app. This includes purchases through the NFL Shop or Patriots and Seahawks team stores, which are also operated by Fanatics.
