Newly appointed President of Football Matt Ryan refused to name Michael Penix Jr. as the starter. During GM Ian Cunningham’s introduction, Ryan deferred the decision to head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Penix is currently recovering from a torn ACL sustained last November against the Panthers. His recovery timeline of nine to twelve months puts his Week 1 availability in serious doubt. Kevin Stefanski praised the young QB’s potential but emphasized that rehab is the current priority.
The Falcons are evaluating the entire roster as they look to end an eight-year playoff drought. Veteran Kirk Cousins remains on the roster after a contract restructure earlier this January. With a new coaching staff in place, Atlanta could still look at free agency or the draft for insurance.
Owner Arthur Blank still views Penix as a franchise piece, but the new regime is being cautious. Falcons fans will have to wait until training camp to see who truly leads the offense in 2026.
