Nathaniel Hackett was Matt LaFleur’s first offensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers seven years ago.

Now, Hackett will be the first offensive coordinator for Matt’s brother, Mike, as he embarks on his first head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals. NFL Network first reported the news.

Hackett was actually set to be the Miami Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach on former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s staff.

But with the Cardinals hiring the younger LaFleur, earlier this week, Hackett moved to a higher-profile job with a family he knows well.

Hackett landed his third offensive coordinator job with the Packers when Matt LaFleur was hired as head coach in 2019.

The Packers would go on to have the No. 5-ranked offense and top-scoring offense in 2020 and were 10th in total offense and scoring in 2021. Aaron Rodgers, who often sang the praises of Hackett, won his third and fourth MVPs in 2020 and 2021.

That success put Hackett on the radar for head coaching jobs in 2022. He was hired by the Denver Broncos, who also brought in Russell Wilson to be the team’s quarterback.

Hackett lasted 15 games as the Broncos’ head coach and didn’t get through that season. He was fired with two games left and the Broncos at 4-11. Denver had the worst-scoring offense in the NFL in 2022.

Hackett would get another opportunity to run an offense when he was hired to be the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator to re-team with Rodgers after the quarterback was traded in that offseason.

But Hackett’s tenure in New York was a nightmare and he didn’t last long there, either. Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury in the first game and Hackett’s offense shuffled through many quarterbacks with no success. The offense finished 30th in the NFL.

Hackett was back in 2024 as there was optimism with Rodgers’ return. But things quickly went sideways and, after the firing of head coach Robert Saleh five games into the season, Hackett was stripped of his play-calling duties.

Hackett landed on his feet again in Green Bay with LaFleur last season as a defensive analyst.

He’s off to Arizona to work with the other LaFleur brother, though he’ll enter a situation with uncertainty around the Cardinals’ offense as Kyler Murray’s future as Arizona’s quarterback is in doubt.

The Cardinals will be Hackett’s fifth offensive coordinator job.
